Our Art Course Catalogue
These are the art courses offered at The High School of Arts and Technology. All 9th graders will take studio art and computer science and will choose a major at the end of their freshman year. Art majors will go on to take the courses offered here.
9th grade
Studio Art
In this half year course, students will be introduced to the elements and principles of art and learn the foundations for their future courses. This is a required course for ALL STUDENTS.
10th grade
Advanced Studio Art
In this full year course, students will build upon what they learned in their 9th foundations course. Students will explore multiple art mediums and art movements. This course is required for all art majors.
* Prerequisite: 9th grade Studio Art
10th and 11th grade
Intro to Photography
This half year add on elective course is open to 10th and 11th grade art majors. Students will learn the basics of digital photography and photo editing as well as gain knowledge of the history of photgraphy.
* Prerequisite: 9th grade Studio Art
10th and 11th grade
Comics
This half year add on elective course is open to 10th and 11th grader art majors. Students focus on character design and development, and work on a variety of graphic novel an comic strip projects.
* Prerequisite: 9th grade Studio Art
10th and 11th grade
Theater performance
This half year add on elective course is open to 10th and 11th grade Art or Technology majors who are interested in theater performance. Students will learn improv, acting, drama, comedy, and musical performance.
* Prerequisites: 9th grade studio art and 9th grade computer science
10th and 11th grade
Theater Tech
This half year add on elective course is open to 10th and 11th grade Art or Technology majors who are interested in finding out more about working behind the scenes in a theater. Students will learn about stage management, set design, lighting and sound.
* Prerequisites: 9th grade studio art and computer science.
11th grade
Graphic Design
In this full year course for art majors, students will be introduced to the Adobe Create Cloud programs Photoshop and Illustrator. Students will create a variety of projects including app icon design, logos, infographics, album covers and photo editing.
Prerequisites: 9th studio artand 10th grade advanced studio art.
12th grade
Animation
In this full year elective for art majors, students will begin by learning the basic concepts of animation. During the Spring semester, students will create a stop motion animated short film from beginning to end and have a premiere in June.
* Prerequisites: 9th grade studio art, 10th grade advanced studio art, 11th grade graphic design.
12th grade
Advanced Photography
In this full year course for art majors, students will explore digital and film photography and photo editing.
Prerequisites: 9th studio art, 10th grade advanced studio art and Intro to Photography
12th grade
AP 2D Art
In this full year advanced placement course for art majors, students will have the opportunity to earn 3 college credits and develop a portfolio.
* Prerequisites: 9th grade studio art, 10th grade advanced studio art, 11th grade graphic design and Intro to Photography.
